Nucor Corp., will expand its production facility at its Nucor Steel Gallatin plant in Ghent, Ky. The $650 million investment will increase capacity from 1.6 million tons to approximately 3 million tons annually at the flat-rolled facility.
The expansion will also increase the maximum coil width to approximately 73 inches.
It follows a previously announced $176 million expansion currently underway to construct a hot band continuous pickle galvanizing line at the facility. The pickle galv line is expected to be operational in the first half of 2019, and produce approximately 500,000 tons annually of galvanized hot-band steel.
“Together with the new galvanizing line, this expansion increases our presence in the important Midwest market, specifically the automotive, agriculture, heavy equipment and energy pipe and tube sectors,” said John Ferriola, chairman, CEO and president of Nucor.
Nucor acquired the former Galltin Steel Company in late 2014.
