Cleveland-Cliffs will demolish the Ashland Works facility that accompanied its 2020 acquisition of AK Steel, Steel Market Update reported. The facility has been idled since 2019.
The company originally considered restarting the operation to produce pig iron, but Cliffs President Lourenco Goncalves ultimately decided to dismantle the 100-year-old steelmaking operation in Kentucky, SMU reports.
Before being idled by previous owner AK Steel, the facility had been used to provide slabs to the company’s facilities in Middletown and Dearborn. The site included a blast furance, basic oxygen furnace, ladle metallurgy furnace, RH degasser, single-strand, straight-mold slab caster and hot-dip galvanizing and Galvanneal line.
