Canadian steelmaker Stelco will construct a new pig iron making facility adjacent to its Lake Erie Works facility in Hamilton, Ontario. The new facility is expected to have capacity of one million tons of pig iron annually.
Construction on the facility is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2020, in conjunction with the planned blast furnace reline. The company anticipates pig iron shipments will be made the following quarter.
“This investment will further amplify our tactical flexibility by providing the capability to produce more than one million tons of pig iron annually,” said David Cheney, CEO of Stelco Holdings.
