U.S. Steel Corporation reacted quickly to the strike called by the United Autoworkers, idling its remaining blast furnace at its Granite City Works facility in Illinois.
The steelmaker cited “risk mitigation” for the decision to idle blast furnace B at Granite City Works. "We have decided to temporarily idle blast furnace B at Granite City Works and are reallocating volumes as needed to other domestic facilities to efficiently meet customer demand," a statement from U.S. Steel said.
U.S. Steel had previously announced plans to sell the blast furnaces at Granite City to SunCoke Energy, a pig iron producer, though that deal has never been completed. The company previously idled other steelmaking operations at the facility.
