The Association of Steel Distributors kicked off the FMA Annual Meeting by delivering their highest honor, the Steel Executive of the Year, to Alliance Steel President Andrew Gross. He became the 61st winner of the honor.
Gross, who is finishing up his second year as president of the association, has been a driver inside the group and heading up his Illinois-based service center company. He was a key figure in the association’s integration into the FMA, a move that has resulted in the growth of the ASD to more than 100 members.
“I thank the FMA for allowing the ASD to hitch our wagon to their train,” Gross said during the dinner in his honor.
Additionally, in 2018, Gross announced that his company’s headquarters would relocate from Bedford Park, Ill., to a larger facility in Gary, Ind. The move will be accompanied by the addition of new equipment.
Gross was born into a steel family. And he was introduced Tuesday by his son, Alliance Corporate Vice President Drew Gross. The two have been working side by side for the past 11 years. In his acceptance speech, Andy Gross recalled recalled some wisdom proffered by his brother Greg during a difficult moment in his career. “You need to eat, drink and sleep the steel business. If you’re not all in, you’re not going to make it,” Greg Gross told him.
“Forty years later, I say to you, 'I’m all in,'” Andy Gross told the audience at FMA.
