One of the highlights of last week’s FMA Annual Meeting was the presentation of the Association of Steel Distributors’ Steel Executive of the Year Award. The ASD has been part of the broader FMA for the past half decade.

This year’s recipient is a self-made service center executive, Valentino Simone of Target Steel. Simone founded the Flat Rock, Mich., company three decades ago with brother Michael, and has turned it into one of the largest in the industry. Target ranked 30th in the most recent MCN Top 50 Service Centers, with 2021 revenue of $633 million.

When he was chosen as this year’s recipient in January, Simone said, “I look at the people on this list who were honored before me … it’s pretty impressive.”

He’s not kidding about that. The ASD honor is, in all likelihood, the oldest in the industry, honoring members of the steel supply chain for more than 60 years.

In addition to Simone, Hickey Metal Fab of Salem, Ohio, was honored at the event with The Fabricator’s Industry Award.
