The eighth annual Steel Summit was held this week in Atlanta, and once again, SMU’s annual conference has outdone itself. Attendance at this year’s conference increased nearly 40 percent to 912 people, as more and more folks learn about the benefits of this worthwhile event.

President Donald Trump has reached an agreement with Mexico on a potential replacement to NAFTA. The two sides agreed to the U.S.-Mexico Trade Deal, a pact contingent on Congressional approval.

U.S. service center steel shipments increased 13.3 percent in July compared with the same month in 2017, reports the Metals Service Center Institute, Rolling Meadows, Ill. Aluminum shipments increased 13.8 percent during the month.

Peter Marcus of World Steel Dynamics projected domestic price for hot-rolled coil will decline precipitously this fall at June’s Steel Success Strategies Meeting in New York.

World crude steel production totaled 154.6 million tons in July, a 5.8 percent increase over the year-ago month, reports the Brussels-based World Steel Association.

The American Iron and Steel Institute, Washington, reported the U.S. imported 3 million tons of steel, including 2.2 million tons of finished steel, in February, according to Census Bureau data. Overall, steel imports for the month were up 19.4 percent and finished steel imports increased 17.5 percent from June.

Zekelman Industries has filed for an Initial Public Offering with the Security and Exchange Commission. The Chicago-based tube company will offer shares of its Class A subordinate voting stock to potential shareholders.

U.S. Steel Corp., will invest $750 million at its Gary Works facility. The investment to modernize and enhance the facility is part of U.S. Steel’s $2 billion asset revitalization program.

Material Sciences Corp., Canton, Mich., has joined the North American Steel Alliance as its 121st member company. NASA is a member-owned purchasing cooperative serving the metals distribution industry.

Arconic will invest $14 million at its Texarkana, Texas, facility to restart previously idled equipment. The facility will provide rolled aluminum sheet to make industrial products.The equipment is expected to be operational by January 2019.
