North Star Weighing CR, Coating Expansion

By on

As North Star BlueScope’s 850,000-metric-ton-expansion at its Delta, Ohio, facility progresses toward full capacity, the company is already considering another round of growth at the facility.

During its recent conference call, North Star BlueScope’s Australian parent company announced the company is considering the addition of another 550,000 tons with the construction of cold-rolling and metal coating lines at the operation.

"The U.S. remains an exciting growth region for BlueScope, where we see strong demand for steel particularly for large scale infrastructure investments, steel-intensive renewable energy systems and the build-out of e-commerce buildings over the coming decade,” a release from the company said. “BlueScope continues to invest in the expansion and debottlenecking of North Star, building self-sufficiency in scrap through BlueScope Recycling, and in painted products through BlueScope Coated Products."

The initial investment, which came online in 2022, included the addition of a third electric arc furnace, second slab caster and new shuttle facility, with spare capacity on the existing hot-strip mill to be used.

“The first half saw real progress on a range of key projects. In the U.S., the ongoing ramp-up of North Star is nearing full run-rate, and the recycling business is performing well,” said Mark Vassella, managing director and CEO of BlueScope, North Star’s parent company.
