Steel Shipments Up, Aluminum Down to Start 2024

Steel and aluminum continued to move in opposite directions in North America during the first month of the year. Steel shipments from both U.S. and Canadian service centers were up against the same month in 2023, while aluminum shipments declined, the Metals Service Center Institute reported in its monthly Business Conditions Report.

U.S. service center shipments of steel products were up 0.5 percent in January compared with the same month last year. Aluminum shipments, in contrast, were down 4.8 percent compared with January 2023.

In Canada, steel shipments from service centers increased a robust 6.8 percent compared with the same month in 2023. Aluminum shipments from Canadian service centers were down 2.6 percent compared with January of last year.
