World crude steel production in May totaled 162.7 million tons, a 5.4 percent increase compared with the same month in 2018, reports the Brussels-based World Steel Association. Through five months, global production increased 5 percent to 764 million tons.

U.S. production was up 5.4 percent in May to 7.7 million tons. For the year to date, production as up 6.2 percent to 31.8 million tons.

Canadian production in May of 1.2 million tons was up 12.8 percent from 2018, while year-to-date production of 5.6 million tons was up 2.1 percent. Mexican production declined 4.1 percent to 1.7 million tons, while five-month production of 8.1 million tons was down 6.3 percent.

China’s crude steel production in May was 89.1 million tons, an increase of 10 percent compared with 2018. India produced 9.2 million tons, up 5.1 percent. Japan produced 8.7 million tons of crude steel in May 2019, down 4.6 percent.

In the EU, Italy’s crude steel production for May was 2.2 million tons, a 1.1 percent increase. France produced 1.2 million tons, down 7.6 percent. And Spanish production declined 7.1 percent to 1.3 million tons.

Crude steel production in Ukraine was 1.8 million tons, up 7.8 percent. Turkish production declined 8 percent to 3.1 million tons.
