Wieland has broken ground on a new recycling facility in Shelbyville, Ky. The facility is located on 79 acres off McConnell Way in Shelby County.

U.S. Steel Corp. plans to sell its two blast furnaces at Granite City Works to SunCoke Energy Inc., a raw material processing and handling company. Under terms of a non-binding letter of intent, SunCoke would convert the facility into a two-million ton granulated pig iron production facility. With that facility, SunCoke would supply U.S. Steel will 100 percent access to the pig iron for the next 10 years.

Historically speaking, when the rest of the world is bemoaning rising oil prices, a position that crosses all party lines, the members of the steel supply chain have nodded in seeming commiseration.

Factors such as the pandemic, demand being greater than supply, and inflation have put a strain on the heavy equipment supply chain with no end in sight.

O’Neal Manufacturing Services has opened a 130,000-square-foot custom steel fabrication center in West Alabama. The company plans to invest more than $4 million in capital expenditures and bring 80 jobs to the City of Fayette.

MC Machinery Systems Inc., headquartered in Elk Grove Village, Ill., has promoted Mary Bopp to marketing supervisor. As head of MC Machinery’s marketing department, Bopp is responsible for the company’s website, advertising, public relations, collateral materials, marketing automation and event marketing. Bopp joined the company as marketing coordinator in October 2020.

The U.S. imported 2.7 million tons of steel in May, including 2.3 million finished tons, up 0.2 percent and 3.1 percent, respectively, compared with the prior month. Total and finished steel imports are up 18.4 percent and 40.8 percent in 2022 compared with the previous year, the American Iron and Steel Institute reported.

The University of Illinois has received a $3.5 million grant from the Department of Energy to complete an advance air capture and storage study at U.S. Steel’s Gary Works facility. The school will conduct research and development to support a front-end engineering design (study on carbon dioxide removal technologies).
