Olympic Steel Inc. reported net income of $2.3 million in the third quarter, compared with a net loss of $1.8 million a year ago. Net sales of $331.4 million were 24 percent higher than the year-ago period.

Chicago-based metal distributor Ryerson reported net income of $1.7 million in the third quarter, compared with $8.2 million in the year-ago period. Third-quarter revenues were $864.2 million, a year-over-year increase of 17.6 percent.

Mississauga, Ontario-based Samuel Son & Co., North America’s third-largest service center company, has grown with the acquisition of processing specialist Main Steel, Elk Grove Village, Ill. Main Steel will continue to operate as an independent processor under the Main Steel name, and will be managed independently from the Samuel service center group.
