Finished Steel Imports Increase in October

The U.S. imported 2.2 million net tons of steel and 1.8 million finished tons in October, the American Iron and Steel Institute reported. Net tons were down 0.3 percent while finished tons increased 16.2 percent compared with September.

For the year to date, total tons were down 9.8 percent vs. 2022, while finished steel imports were off 14.2 percent. Finished steel import market share for October was an estimated 19 percent, down from the 22 percent for the first 10 months.  

Key steel products with a significant import increase in October compared with September were tin plate, up 124 percent; wire rods, up 81 percent; heavy structural shapes, up 76 percent; and hot-rolled bars, up 45 percent.

In October, the largest suppliers were Canada at 557,000 net tons, up 4 percent vs. September; Mexico at 309,000 tons, down 14 percent; South Korea at 167,000 tons, down 50 percent; and Japan at 134,000 tons, up 102 percent.
